ALEXA HOROCHOWSKI / My work addresses the interrelatedness of the natural environment, globalization, culture, and matter. The interplay of these ecological, industrial, and cultural phenomena find a distilled, physical expression in my hybrid objects. Though I recognize the vast disjuncture in scale and impact between my art and the forces it references, I also aspire to an aesthetic of argument and provocation, an art that produces objects of potent agency and reflection, through which viewers are encouraged to question the sustainability of a consumption society that exacerbates inequalities and undermines our environmental resource base.
During my residency at MAM Chiloé I will engage in regular excursions in the Chiloe region documenting the landscape and human extraction activities such as the harvesting of cochayuyo, fishing, and farming. I am interested in learning about the cultural significance these activities hold for the local community, and how sustainability is thought about in relationship to these activities and those of larger, commercial industries such as salmon farming. Though my focus will be on what is happening in and around Chiloé, my work attempts to transcend the singular, and point to our shared problem of global warming.
